With the accelerated global aging process, MN, with its magical "anti-aging" effects, has shined brightly in the field of anti-aging, quickly capturing countless attention and expectations, and becoming a veritable anti-aging star ingredient. However, as the saying goes, "the more popular, the more controversy." In China, this market with unlimited potential and an estimated scale of hundreds of billions, NMN has been controversial since its inception, with its safety and effectiveness becoming the focus of much social discussion.
NMN (β-Nicotinamide Mononucleotide) market can be described as turbulent, with rumors of "NMN is an IQ tax" flying everywhere. Can NMN be safely consumed? These questions concern many and have become a hot topic of discussion.
Although NMN can be synthesized in small amounts in the body from Vitamin B3 in the form of nicotinamide, and it is found in small quantities in various plant and animal foods, such as avocados, cauliflower, cabbage, edamame, and cucumbers, to quickly and efficiently increase NMN intake, taking nutritional supplements containing NMN is undoubtedly a more ideal choice.
However, just as NMN products were gaining popularity, there were reports of NMN products being taken off the shelves in the U.S., and rumors of a "ban order" issued by Chinese customs. Why is this happening?
Since its inception, NMN products have been active in the market as dietary supplements rather than prescription drugs. However, its significant medical potential and broad social attention made NMN a focus for new drug development, with related applications successfully entering the development process. To protect their interests, companies involved in the NMN field made specific requests to the FDA under U.S. law, which led to NMN being taken off Amazon's U.S. site. This indirectly reflects the enormous medical value of NMN, which is being seen as a precious resource for new drug development.
On August 16, 2024, NMN reached a new milestone in its development: The Japan Consumer Affairs Agency approved NMN with triple functionality as a "functional" food ingredient for the first time, officially including it in the functional foods category.
This decision marks the first official recognition of NMN's threefold functionality in Japan's food sector.
Enhances walking ability;
Maintains muscle strength;
Improves skin beauty.
NMN applications in the food sector have made a breakthrough!
As of September 2022, 38 NMN human clinical trials have been registered globally: 20 in Japan, 12 in the U.S., and 6 in China. Among these, results from 11 trials have been published. Notably, the three effects of NMN recently approved in Japan are based on the results of two double-blind randomized controlled clinical trials.
Specifically, the first trial focused on healthy males aged 65 and older, who consumed 250 mg of NMN daily for 12 days, resulting in nearly double the NAD+ concentration in their blood, and significant improvements in walking speed, getting up ability, and grip strength. The second trial involved healthy men and women aged 30 to 60 who took 125 mg of NMN daily. After 8 weeks, compared to the placebo group, the NMN group showed significant improvements in skin moisture retention capacity and elasticity, which may influence factors like liposomal price in the market.
